Plans to create an upgraded four-way intersection across South Rd to reduce congestion and improve safety have been unveiled, as the latest stage of works associated with the biggest building project in state history – the River Torrens to Darlington project.

It comes as community feedback is sought to identify social and environmental factors and potential impacts of the project build, designed to ensure lasting benefits for the community.

A Project Assessment Report has been released, summarising the extensive technical investigations, assessments and planning work that has already been undertaken to consider a range of important social and environmental factors related to the design.

The public has also today been offered a glimpse of the magnitude of the tunnelling operation, with a new scale model of a Tunnel Boring Machine unveiled for display at the project’s Hilton-based Community Information Centre.

The 2.7 metre, 80kg model was commissioned from TBM manufacturer Herrenknecht and follows the specifications of the TBM that will be used in construction of the T2D – which will be around 100 metres long and weigh up to 5000 tonnes.

The robotic model gives visitors to the centre a sense of the scale and technical expertise required to deliver the T2D Project, which will see more than 6 kilometres of tunnels constructed for the motorway.

Works continue on east-west connections to allow for smoother operation of the road network once the T2D project is complete, with new plans unveiled today to re-route Raglan Avenue traffic north via a new road link, creating an upgraded four-way intersection with Edward Street.

A new link road will be constructed as part of the Raglan Avenue, Edward Street and South Road network upgrade, removing the ‘dogleg’ movement for traffic travelling between Edward Street and Raglan Avenue.

The $35 million undertaking is one of the suite of intersection upgrades linked to the broader the T2D Project that will collectively ensure the Adelaide road network functions efficiently, both during construction of the project and once it is completed.

The project also includes work to upgrade the intersections of Edward Street, Raglan Avenue and Price Street with South Road.

The Price Street and South Road intersection upgrade will include the installation of traffic signals, pedestrian crossing and right hand turn access lane into Castle Plaza Shopping Centre from South Road – preserving Price Street as a residential zone.

There will also be opportunities for upgrades to amenity, road treatments, pedestrian crossing points, integrated connections and cycle paths, and indented bus bays as part of the Connecting Edwardstown project.

Main works are scheduled to commence in early 2025, with the project expected to open to traffic in late 2025.

Community members can visit the T2D Community Information Centre at 290 South Road, Hilton to provide feedback on the concept plan and ask questions of the project team. Visit www.t2d.sa.gov.au/contact-us.
