More than 797,000 recycled glass bottles have been diverted from landfill to form sustainably-sourced asphalt as part of the South Road rehabilitation works being undertaken between Glengarry Avenue, Glandore and English Avenue, Clovelly Park.

Nearly 4000 tonnes of recycled asphalt pavement have been incorporated into the rehabilitation works to date, lowering the carbon footprint for the T2D Project.

The asphalt being used for the work contains 2.5 per cent recycled crushed glass in the wearing course and 10 per cent recycled crushed glass in the intermediate and base layers.

The use of sustainable asphalt has created a saving of the equivalent of 192 tonnes of carbon dioxide and the equivalent of 78 cars off the road for one year.

The glass has been sourced from local recycling facilities, which receive recyclable items from local councils and process materials for re-use.

The works are being undertaken to deliver a new road surface to facilitate safe and reliable journeys between Tonsley and Torrensville during the construction of the new T2D motorway.

Work currently being undertaken between Glengarry Avenue, Glandore and Bennet Avenue, Melrose Park is expected to be completed by early October, weather permitting.

Rehabilitation works on South Road are being undertaken by Downer.
