What is proposed?

The Manton Street and Adam Street junction upgrade will provide additional capacity for city-bound traffic through adding an additional left turn lane from Manton Street into Adam Street (eastbound).

It will also improve public transport efficiency, pedestrian and cyclist safety, and access to the River Torrens Linear Path.

Why is the project needed?

As part of the River Torrens to Darlington (T2D) project there will be $850 million worth of additional network and amenity upgrades along and around the final 10.5km section of South Road. These works are essential to the proper functioning of the motorway and wider road network both during and after construction of the T2D project.

The Manton Street and Adam Street junction upgrade will reduce congestion and traffic flow restrictions currently caused by the merging of two lanes along Manton Street (eastbound).

Updates made to concept design following community feedback

The junction upgrade was generally well received by the local community. The proposed additional city bound lane was overwhelmingly supported. Improving pedestrian access and safety in the precinct was also well supported.

We also heard that removing the right-hand turn from Manton Street onto Adam Street would make access to the Hindmarsh precinct difficult, particularly for larger delivery vehicles needing to divert onto Richards Street.

To resolve this, we have revised the design to retain the signalised right-hand turn from Manton Street onto Adam Street (west bound).

By retaining this signalised turn, traffic will be able to continue to access the Hindmarsh precinct directly via Adam Street and will no longer need to divert onto Richard Street.

As a result of this change, we will not proceed with the proposed Richard Street right-hand turn from Manton Street.

The second lane (city bound) on Manton Street and east-west access in both directions along Adam Street is also still retained.

Have improvements for people walking and cycling been considered in the concept design?

The concept design includes improvements to pedestrian safety by re-aligning the existing five separate pedestrian crossing points to three direct crossing points. It better accommodates large groups of people walking to or from nearby football and entertainment precincts, with people not required to wait on traffic islands as they do now.

Have improvements for public transport been considered in the concept design?

The additional left turn lane from Manton Street into Adam Street (eastbound) will improve access to the right turn into Port Road and improve the efficiency of the GO Zone bus services which operate via Manton Street and Adam Street.

What is the project timing?

Construction due to start in mid-2024 with project completion expected in the third quarter of 2024 (weather permitting).
