The first of four long-term air quality monitoring stations has been installed as part of the River Torrens to Darlington (T2D) Project to monitor conditions along the project alignment.

The first station was installed in Clovelly Park behind the Tonsley Hotel near the southern portal of the Southern Tunnels.

Works will now move to Glandore to install an air quality monitoring station near the northern portal of the Southern Tunnels. Following on from these works, stations on either end of the Northern Tunnels will be installed.

The stations will help to gain a better understanding of the existing weather and air quality levels along the alignment both during construction and once the T2D project is completed and open to traffic.

The stations have been carefully located to minimise any impact on the local community, while ensuring accurate measurement of key environmental parameters.

The stations are designed as low-profile transportable units and contain a range of sensitive environmental monitoring instruments. No fumes of any kind will be emitted during their operation.

Stop-start traffic and vehicles idling in congestion is a significant source of air pollution.

Once open, the T2D Project will improve traffic flow and reduce congestion and traffic idling by moving thousands of vehicles into the tunnels each day, resulting in better air quality and fewer stop-starts for motorists.

The stations are being installed by Australian company Lear Siegler Australasia.

The 10.5 kilometre T2D Project will complete the North-South Corridor, creating 78 kilometres of non-stop, traffic light-free motorway between Gawler and Old Noarlunga.
